The Caribbean, with more than 700 gorgeous islands, is the perfect spot for a winter vacation. December to April is the best time to visit, and yet, you can go year-round and find beautiful weather too (it’s a little more of a gamble during hurricane season from August to October, but you can still get a sunny and hot week). Scattered across the Caribbean Sea, the islands are close enough to make it the world’s premier holiday spot for cruising, but still so different, that it’s sometimes hard to choose one over another. Here are a few pointers to help you choose between them.

Fun Family Activities for Your Staycation

Fun activites

So maybe you just don’t have the money or time to getaway with the family this summer. What is the alternative? A staycation! There are lots of fun family activities you can do the with kids in your own neck of the woods.  The obvious advantages of course are no travel stress – no planes to catch and luggage to get lost.  Not much need to plan and prepare – you can just go!

You can be a tourist in your own town or one close by. Splurge by going out for a nice lunch or dinner. Explore all the areas a tourist would – there are most likely many options that are even free and you may find places that you did not even know that existed. If there is a visitor center – start there to start exploring.

Other options for fun activities include not even having to leave home. You can just relax – catch up on a good book you have been planning to read or movies, especially if the weather is not good. Make popcorn and camp out in the living room – I promise the kids will love it.

Otherwise get out and about in your own yard. Wondering how to keep the kids from getting bored? Check out these ideas from www.parents.com. They have put together some great ideas for keeping your kids amused. Keep them busy and they just might think that this is the best family vacation ever!

Some of the suggestions for Fun Family Activities from parents.com are:

  • Children old enough to handle a crayon can make angel faces. Lay a leaf on paper and rub outward with side of crayon, creating a silhouette and making different halo and hairdo effects. Remove the leaf and draw in a chin, a face, and an outline for the hair.

  • You’ll need four players and a large rubber ball. Draw a 12″ x 12″ square on your driveway. Divide into four squares, A, B, C, and D. One player stands in each square. The player in A starts by bouncing the ball in his square, then batting it with open hands into another square. That player must hit the ball into another square. When one player misses or hits the ball out of bounds, he moves to D, the players behind him advance, and you begin again.

  • Secure your picnic tablecloth with these colorful weights. To make, wash and dry rocks and cover each with a coat of decoupage glue, like Mod Podge. Before the glue dries, decorate the rocks using colored or patterned papers cut in a variety of shapes. To finish, paint a second coat of glue over the rock and let dry.

This tropical paradise in South-East Asia has some of the most astonishing and marvellous beaches in the world. Greece Family Beach Vacation

Santorini, Greece

You can also enjoy the Aegean blue waters of the seemingly untouched beaches of Pori Beach in Ano Koufonisi and Sarti Beach in Chalkidiki for your family beach vacation. You can never mention the word Greece and beach in one sentence without thinking about Santorini. While Santorini boasts of many wonderful beaches, nothing is quite as unique and as intriguing as the Red Beach that is locked against a red-rock cliff.

Or if red is not your thing, you can get pink sand in between your toes at the Elafonisi Beach in Crete.

But, if you want a beach that is teeming with locals and tourists, you can head on out with your family at the Paradise Beach in Mykonos or Myrtos Beach in Kefalonia. And just a couple miles south of Athens, is the activity-filled Vouliagmeni Beach.

Top Ten Family Travel Tips

Top Ten Family Travel TipsSo I have had the travel bug for a long time now. I travelled when I was single, when I was married, when I had a family – I even travelled while pregnant! I have travelled with my extended family, with friends, with other couples and with other people’s kids. There are a few things I learned along the way and I would like to share my Top Ten Family Travel Tips with you.

So in David Letterman style…..let’s start with Number 10:

10. Pack Less – The rule of thumb is to lay it all out and then remove at least 1/3. Airlines and getting stricter and you do not need to pay big bucks for overweight baggage fees for those clothes you will not end up wearing anyway.

9. Do a Splurge – I love to get a good deal and stay within my budget as much as anyone BUT it is nice to do a splurge on something – whether it is a really nice meal or one night in a beautiful hotel – treat yourself and make a memory.

8. Reduce pandemonium of travelling with kids. How? Prepare for hunger, headaches and boredom by being prepared. Always have the necessary gear on hand including: wipes, kids’ Tylenol, first aid supplies, toys or coloring books, non-perishable snacks and a treat (chocolate, lollipop) to stave off potential tantrums.

7. Scale back on souvenirs. Don’t let vacation travel fill your house with more clutter! Instead, consider these clutter-free options: collecting small ornaments for a holiday “travel tree”, purchasing postcards, assembling a scrapbook or keeping a personal travel journal to remind you of your trip. Also give kids a souvenir budget to stop the “I want, I want, I want”.

6. Save on Meals – Get a room or a rental with a small kitchen and prepare breakfast or lunch yourself. If kids are in tow – be sure to choose kid friendly restaurants – some will let kids eat free or discounted. Share meals or get happy hour deals – some restaurants really fill your plate – share – your wallet and waistline will appreciate it! An all-inclusive resort where meals are included is also a great option.

5. Plan relaxation days and naps – Rest is important for everyone. Be sure to interchange “busy” days with “rest and relax” days. If you are travelling with small children, be sure to plan out times for naps – very important to avoid tired and cranky kids.

4. Budget Extra Time – Things will always take longer than you expect – especially if you have kids or older family members in tow. Factor in extra time and reduce your stress trying to catch your flight or make it to the next attraction.

3. Plan Ahead – Plan out as much you can ahead of time. Find restaurants in the area, attractions and what you are going to do. I usually type out a daily itinerary with all the important information. You can leave room for spontaneity but you want to relax and enjoy your vacation and not spend it searching for where to eat or what to do or the address of where you are going.

2. Be flexible – Even when you plan ahead and budget extra time – lines will be long, traffic will be heavy, flights will be delayed and children (and adults) will get grumpy. But with just a little planning and an open mind, you will survive. Take a deep breath and find something to enjoy right where you are.

And my number one travel tip for you….. Travel More – The new car, remodelling project, and iPhone can wait instead make memories that your family will remember for a lifetime. If you truly want to travel more, you can make it happen.

Kids will love the beach and the amusement park with all the excitement that goes with it.

There’s plenty to explore further afield on your family vacation to Old Orchard Beach. Get a load of culture, history, and art in the city of Portland that lies to the north. Another good neighbor is Scarborough Marsh, the largest salt marsh in the state, with a handful of activities of its own to offer. In the vicinity is Ferry Beach State Park which is definitely worth exploring.

Check out the Old Orchard Beach Pier with a variety of shops, restaurants, and game parlors. Over at Pirate’s Cove you’ll find, of all things, a Mini-Golf that should do well for a change of pace. Funtown USA and Splashtown Water Park will have plenty to keep the whole family in high spirits.

For more action on your family travel to Old Orchard Beach, book in for a sightseeing cruise, whale watching cruise, or even deep sea-fishing if the kids are old enough to brave it.

What makes Old Orchard Beach a great family vacation destination would have to be the ideal concept of an amusement park in the vicinity of the seven-mile beachfront.

Palace Playland  stands tall among all the entertainment venues along Old Orchard Beach with a view to giving the young and the young-at-heart the time of their lives.

Touted widely as “Maine’s Premier Family Beach Resort,” a family vacation in Old Orchard Beach really does have a lot to offer. It’s not every day that you get to go canoeing in a marsh or go on a Lobster Boat Tour and actually see how lobsters are trapped.

There really is more to this old beach than meets the eye.

Enjoy the giant Ferris wheel, the Carousel, waterslides, and fireworks every Thursday night. Ensure you’ve given top priority to this spot on your family travel to Old Orchard Beach itinerary, for your kids will want to come back again and again.

Go Boston Card - 61 Boston Attractions.
